Eminent Holiness the Desire of the Believer
Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Jesus Christ.
~ Phil 3:12
Oh for a closer walk with God,
A calm and heavenly frame,
A light to shine upon the road
That leads me to the Lamb!
Diligence in Worldly Calling
Study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you.
~ 1 Thess 4:11
Midst hourly cares, may love present
Its incense to thy throne;
And while the world our hands employs,
Our hearts be thine alone.
Take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
~ Luke 21:34
The world employs its various snares,
Of hopes and pleasures, pains and cares,
And chain’d to earth I lie:
When shall my fetter’d powers be free,
And leave these seats of vanity,
And upward learn to fly?
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
Lord, ever let me freely yield
What most I prize to thee,
Who never hast a good withheld,
Or wilt withhold from me.
Thy favour all my journey through,
Thou art engaged to grant;
What else I want, or think I do,
’Tis better still to want.
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Praise to God, immortal praise,
For the love that crowns our days;
Bounteous Source of every joy,
Let thy praise our tongues employ.
Inheritance Among the Sanctified
Brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
From earth we shall quickly remove,
And mount to our native abode;
The house of our Father above,
The palace of angels and God.
The Fruits of the Spirit
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
’Tis God himself the ground prepares,
His Spirit sows the land;
And every pleasant fruit it bears,
Is nurtur’d by his hand.
