The Peace I give you transcends your intellect. When most of your mental energy goes into efforts to figure things out, you are unable to receive this glorious gift.
Dear Jesus, I really desire to receive Your Peace. Yet I know I spend way too much time trying to figure things out. Actually, many of the problems I try to solve are not even my own. My overactive mind clamps on to other people’s difficulties—trying to work out what the best solution might be. I’d like to think my motive is compassionate concern, but I know there is also a strong element of seeking to play god in people’s lives. Help me relinquish this role, which was never meant to be mine, so I can rest in You—the One who has everything figured out.
Beloved, your very active mind definitely causes you problems, but it can also be a source of blessing. You need to practice directing that mental energy toward Me. I have taught you to use My Name as a reminder that I am with you: Lovingly whispering “Jesus” can turn your day around. Giving thanks is another wonderful way to come into My Presence frequently. I also want you to use brief prayers of praise and petition, which glorify Me and soothe your anxious thoughts. None of this is new to you, but you need practice in these delightful disciplines.
If you use your mental energy to focus on Me, you will have no problem receiving My Peace. My Presence and Peace are inseparable: When your mind is stayed on Me, I keep you in perfect Peace. I understand that your ability to stay focused on Me is limited. I do not expect perfection from you—only perseverance. Never give up!
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
~ Philippians 4:6–7
A man’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand his own way?
~ Proverbs 20:24
You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.
~ Isaiah 26:3 [NKJV]
